Arsenal have had a mixed Premier League campaign and they have lacked consistency over an extended period of games.
The Gunners have played out eight draws after 22 matches. This sees them six points behind leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.
Injuries have been a prime reason behind the inconsistency, and manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed the need for attacking reinforcement.
With Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus on the sidelines, the Gunners require another marquee attacking option to keep up in the title pursuit.
According to UOL in Brazil, Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Cunha has emerged as the top target for the London heavyweights.
Nottingham Forest are also exploring a move for the attacker, but it is reported that Arsenal are ‘very interested’ in signing him after Jesus’ serious knee injury.
However, Wolves are set to demand a premium fee in the region of £67 million. The price could be negotiable if Cunha departs at the end of the season.
The Gunners have been long-term admirers of the Brazil international and have followed his progress from his time with Atletico Madrid in Spain.
Since his move to the Premier League, Cunha has made steady development. He has been brilliant this campaign with 10 goals and four assists in the top-flight.
The 25-year-old has created 11 big chances for his teammates and has excelled with his high pressing and work rate. He has also impressed with his recoveries and dribbling skills.
Cunha has the traits to suit Arteta’s playing style at the Gunners, but the major stumbling block could be the reported price tag to persuade Wolves into a sale.
With Wolves in a relegation dogfight, the hierarchy could be reluctant to lose their most important asset unless they receive a transfer package of around £67m.
Arsenal are capable of paying such a fee, but this could hamper their transfer business this summer.
The budget could be limited for the next transfer window, keeping Profit and Sustainability Rules in mind.
We should know in the coming days whether Arsenal will make an effort to land Cunha, who has been described as a ‘special player‘ by Wolves manager Vitor Pereira.
