On Thursday at midday, Arsenal confirmed the signing of Christian Norgaard from fellow Premier League side Brentford.

Though Arsenal didn’t disclose the fee or Norgaard’s contract length, both details have been reported elsewhere. According to David Ornstein of The Athletic and Ed Aarons of The Guardian, the Gunners are set to pay £9-10m for Norgaard with add-ons that could take the deal to £12m.

Aarons adds that Norgaard has signed a two-year contract with Arsenal, with the option of extending if by another year. Should the Gunners take up that option, the midfielder would be under contract until 2028.

Arsenal themselves did confirm the 31-year-old’s new shirt number, with the player to wear the number 16.

Rob Holding was the most recent player to wear 16, before his departure to Crystal Palace. Aaron Ramsey wore it before him, with both former Gunners holding the number across eight different seasons.

Norgaard is unlikely to have the number for quite as long as that, but you never know.

Arsenal’s decision to sign Norgaard came down to two key points – his experience and the Gunners’ need for low-cost defensive midfield reinforcements.

Martin Zubimendi has already arrived to fill that defensive midfield role, but the Gunners really needed two additions to replace the two outgoing players.

With all the other business Arsenal need to do this summer, a £10m deal for a Premier League-ready player like Norgaard worked out nicely.
