Arsenal midfielder Lia Wälti has withdrawn from the latest Swiss national team camp and she is returning to North London.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via a media update from the Swiss Football Association this morning.

It is understood that Wälti is not returning to her club with an injury. The withdrawal was a mutual decision made by the player and national team boss Inka Grings. It has been determined that Wälti needs time to rest ahead of a hectic end of season run in with Arsenal.

The Gunners may need Wälti to play up to nine games between mid-April and the first week of June. Arsenal have at least two more matches in this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League while they remain firmly embedded in the Barclays Women’s Super League’s title race. The North Londoners are already without the services of Beth Mead, Vivianne Miedema and Steph Catley and they can ill afford to lose any more players to injury. With Wälti being such an important player for head coach Jonas Eidevall, it is important that she remains in the best condition possible going into the final weeks of the season.

Arsenal return to action following the international break with a Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Manchester United on 19 April 2023.
