Arsenal have enquired over the possibility of signing Barcelona attacker Memphis Depay ahead of the summer transfer window, Spanish outlet Superdeporte claims.
The Dutchman only joined the Catalan giants on a free transfer last summer, but there is uncertainty over his future after the Blaugrana’s mid-season spending spree.
Ferran Torres and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were signed on permanent deals while Adama Traore arrived on a six-month loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Amidst this, Depay is no longer guaranteed a starting spot, and this could pave the way for his departure when the transfer window reopens during the summer.
The Dutchman previously struggled to make a mark in the Premier League with Manchester United, but he is said to be keen on redeeming himself with another club.
Arsenal have now emerged as potential contenders to sign him. The Gunners are currently loaded with wide attacking options, but there is room in the centre-forward role.
Depay has excelled from the position over the past few years for club and country. The north London giants could swoop for his services in the next transfer window.
With his contract expiring in June next year, he could be available for a knockdown price. Depay could be an ideal player to replace Alexandre Lacazette in the Gunners’ frontline.
Similar to Lacazette, Depay has the knack for playing in a deeper attacking position. The 28-year-old has also impressed with his hold-up play and ability to make key passes.
The goals have dried up for Lacazette whose contract expires this summer. Depay, who is still in the prime of his career, could be a like-for-like replacement for the ex-Lyon star.
Depay, who has bagged 10 goals in La Liga this campaign, is also on the radar of Everton and Newcastle United, but the Gunners should have the edge if they qualify for Europe.
