Following a 3-0 win over Real Madrid in the first leg, many are expecting Arsenal to secure a berth in the semifinals of the Champions League.

However, as the Gunners prepare a defence for the second leg tie at Santiago Bernabeu, the club have received negative reports with regards to the fitness of two of their midfielders.

Jorginho ruled out of Real Madrid clash

According to Mirror (h/t AS), Jorginho has been ruled out of the Real Madrid clash owing to a chest injury he picked up against Brentford.

The Italian midfielder, who has featured in 26 matches this season, was forced off late in the game, leaving Mikel Arteta’s side to finish with ten men.

Post-match, Arteta confirmed the severity of the issue: “He said he couldn’t breathe well, so it might have to do with one of his ribs. I think it’s something important.”

Scans have since confirmed the injury will sideline the 33-year-old for at least a few weeks. Though Arsenal are hopeful he’ll return before the season ends, he will not be part of the squad that travels to the Spanish capital.

Thomas Partey remains a doubt

Meanwhile, Thomas Partey, who opened the scoring against Brentford, is also under observation after picking up a knock.

While there is cautious optimism around his recovery, he remains a doubt for Wednesday’s clash.

Partey has been crucial to Arteta’s plans this season, logging over 3,300 minutes across 45 matches, and his absence would be a major blow.

For Real Madrid, though, it will be a major boost. While Arteta may have to contend with the potential absence of Partey and Jorginho, Carlo Ancelotti will be boosted by the return of Dani Ceballos.

In fact, the Italian tactician is banking heavily on Ceballos and Aurelien Tchouameni to change the complexion of the tie, with Real Madrid eyeing a major comeback victory over the Gunners.
