Arsenal are interested in signing Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi next summer, according to the Independent.
Gunners manager Mikel Arteta wants a deep-lying midfielder, and the Spain star has proven himself after impressing at the 2024 European Championship.
Liverpool came close to signing Zubimendi, but he opted to remain with Sociedad for one more season after Robin Le Normand and Mikel Merino decided to leave.
The Gunners are now hoping the 25-year-old would be open to joining them next summer as Arteta looks to strengthen his options in the middle of the park.
Zubimendi has been identified as a player ‘who will become one of the best midfielders in the world’. He could take Arsenal to the next level alongside Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard.
Arsenal want a number six who is a pure passer, another who is physical and one who is press-resistant, with Arteta keen to be able to pick a certain midfield as it is required against specific opponents.
Zubimendi has a goal and two assists in 16 games this term after ending last season with four goals and an assist in 45 appearances.
His ability to dictate the pace of a game has attracted Arsenal, and their good relationship with the La Liga club could come in handy in talks next summer.
Injuries have limited their chances of impressing so far in the early title race this term, and they need quality squad depth to boost their chances.
Landing Zubimendi will be huge for the Gunners, and he could be available for a decent fee as the condition which made him stay last summer ensures that he will be allowed to leave for the right offer.
