Speaking to Starsport (h/t Metro), Arsenal legend Paul Merson advised Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to rest Bruno Fernandes against Liverpool in the FA Cup and prioritise the Premier League title.
Liverpool go into the weekend FA Cup encounter in terrible form. Jurgen Klopp’s side are yet to win in their last 5 league games, and have fallen to 4th place in the table.
This has enabled United to leapfrog the Reds in the league table and set themselves up for their first Premier League title since 2013. And, Merson thinks that the Red Devils should sacrifice the FA Cup for it.
He states that Bruno Fernandes should be rested against Liverpool as he looks “tired”. Solskjaer, according to Merson, should focus on winning the league and should pick a weakened team against the Reds.
“For me, he [Bruno] doesn’t play in this game [FA Cup 4th round]. United haven’t had a chance to win the league like this for a few years.”
Merson explains that Solskjaer has to take this opportunity to give everything he has got to win the title. And he says that progressing in the FA Cup is secondary to that.
“They have to take this chance and prioritise the title race. The FA Cup just isn’t as important.”
Merson makes these comments as he feels Fernandes is exhausted after playing a number of games in a short span. He advocates resting him and keeping him fresh for the league games, as he “lifts them”. (h/t Metro)
