Arsenal will reportedly launch an internal investigation into their transfer strategy based on last summer’s club record transfer for Nicolas Pépé.

The Gunners paid £72m (€80m) for Pépé following his outstanding season for Lille – their most expensive ever signing after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January 2018.

According to ESPN, an effort to ‘streamline and improve their off-field operations’ has sparked such reviews, as opposed to the 25-year-old’s performances last season.

There is said to be no sense of regret at signing Pépé, but many people within the game were surprised at the size of the fee Arsenal paid to Lille.

The North London club have, however, embarked on a wider recruitment overhaul which led to the departures of various senior scouts, including Francis Cagigao, Brian McDermott and Brian Clark.

Pépé scored eight goals and assisted 10 during his first season in English football.
