Arsenal will ‘definitely’ back Mikel Arteta in the upcoming summer transfer window following a successful season, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Gunners have surprised many fans, pundits and reporters alike with their displays in 2021/22 and are currently in pole position to qualify for the final Champions League spot.

Arteta and Arsenal overcame a slow start to the campaign when they lost their opening three Premier League games to put themselves within touching distance of Europe’s elite cup competition.

The capital club spent heavily last summer, though, bringing in the likes of Benjamin White, Aaron Ramsdale, Martin Odegaard, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Nuno Tavares for a combined £150 million.

However, Arteta is once again expected to be handed a sizeable budget by the owners KSE to improve his first-team squad after displaying his true potential as a manager in recent months.

Victories over Manchester United, Chelsea and West Ham have put Arsenal in fourth place in the Premier League standings, four points ahead of fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur with just three games remaining.

And the Emirates Stadium outfit could seal their fate by securing all three points in what is set to be the biggest north London derby in years on Thursday night.

What has Jones said about Arsenal?

Jones believes Arsenal will ‘have to make signings’ ahead of next season as their squad is ‘not deep enough’ and is confident that Arteta will receive the funding he requires to do so.

He told GiveMeSport: “I definitely think they’ll back Arteta. I think that they’ve got to; there’s European football on the horizon, the squad’s not deep enough anyway, so they have to make signings.

“The level of those signings we’ll only know once we know if they’ve qualified for the Champions League or not.”

Who could Arsenal sign?

According to The Times, Arsenal are set to renew their interest in Inter striker Lautaro Martinez after leapfrogging Spurs and Man Utd in the race for a top-four finish.

And Football.London have claimed that Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus and AS Roma attacker Tammy Abraham are also on Arteta’s shortlist as he searches for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s long-term heir.

Meanwhile, The Telegraph state that Arsenal are ‘ready to explore’ the possibility of bringing Raheem Sterling to the club after handing Arteta a new contract last week, with the pair familiar with each other from their time together at the Etihad.
