Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno believes he has proved his worth after the EFL Cup penalty shootout win over Liverpool on Thursday.

The Gunners are into the quarter-final thanks to Leno, who saved spot-kicks from Divock Origi and Harry Wilson.

Leno won the number one spot from Emiliano Martinez, who was sold to Aston Villa this past summer, and the German felt validated after the win over Liverpool.

"It was a very tough game. We made a few changes, you could see our philosophy and intention to win this game," said Leno.

"This is a chance to win another trophy, that is our target. Of course it is good for a goalkeeper to make some penalty saves and see some laughing faces after the end. I'd prefer to win the game without penalties. The main thing is we won the game.

"It is not easy to come to same place with a big disappointment from Monday. We analysed the game and the manager found the right words to lift us.

"The club has always given me the feeling I was the number one, I am the number one and will be the number one. My job is to prove it every week and I feel I have done that tonight."
