In another dramatic match at the Gold Cup, the USMNT were eliminated at the semi-final stage despite a Matt Turner penalty save.

After reaching the Gold Cup semi-finals in large part thanks to Matt Turner keeping out three of Canada’s five penalties in the quarter-final shootout, the USA prepared to face Panama in the semis on Wednesday night.

Turner managed to maintain a clean sheet throughout the initial 90 minutes, but with the USMNT also failing to score, the game went to extra time.

Panama finally broke the deadlock in the 99th minute, with Ivan Anderson rounding Turner before turning into an empty net.

The U.S. quickly responded, as tournament top scorer Jesus Ferreira netted his seventh goal of the competition to equalise.

But neither side could find a winner, with Turner making four saves across the 120 minutes to send the match to penalties.

The shootout started badly for the USMNT, with Jesus Ferreira missing his spot-kick, but Turner managed to get his side back in it with a nice save from Panama’s third taker Christian Martinez.

Unfortunately, that was his only save of the shootout, so when the USMNT’s Cristian Roldan saw his effort saved by Orlando Mosquera, Panama stepped up to win it and progress to the final.

Turner faced a lot of penalties over the course of the tournament, saving one in normal time against Jamaica and keeping another four out in his two penalty shootouts.

The goalkeeper also won the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League and the Best Goalkeeper award in June, but his time on international duty is now finally over.

It remains to be seen when Turner will link back up with Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal squad, but it’s not impossible he’ll simply wait in the U.S. and wait for the Gunners to arrive on their pre-season tour this weekend.
