Arsenal fans watched on as their team lost at St James’ Park.
A repeat of that 1-0 Newcastle United win almost exactly 12 months earlier.
Two well deserved consecutive home victories for Eddie Howe and his players at St James’ Park against the Gunners, indeed, three out of four on Tyneside (so far…) for the NUFC Head Coach against this lot.
Arsenal fans watching on as their team once again registered just the one effort on target in this fixture, the same as November 2023.
Interesting to look at what Arsenal fans were having to say before Saturday’s game AND then their comments after this latest Mikel Arteta defeat at St James’ Park.
Arsenal fans commenting via their Arsenal Mania message board:
‘We really should be winning this, Newcastle are not that good.’
‘We should beat them. I’m still bitter about last seasons farse but they’re really not that good a team.
Defensively they’re very poor and Pope is a shocking goalkeeper, so error prone.
We win this 0-2.’
‘Agree, they’re not very good from what I’ve seen of them this season. If we bring our game we’ll win this.’
‘They are really poor. Their record is better than their performance. If we really go for it we can put 4 past them.’
‘0-3 away win. Goals by Saka 1, Partey and OG.’
‘Going for a 4-0 to us, feeling tasty.’
‘Toon are not a team I would go out of my way to watch, so I don’t think I have seen them this season yet.
On paper they look ok, Guimaraes/Tonali/Joelinton midfield. Plus some decent pace with Barnes/Gordon/Isak. Dan Burn is always a disaster waiting to happen, so I am sure we can profit there.’
‘Newcastle get influenced alot with thier fans we need to not let thier fans get into our head. Need stay calm not make errors or of course red card.’
‘Joelinton and Bruno will hospitalise one of our players and be rewarded with a pat on the back from the ref. Meanwhile Saka will get a straight red for kicking the ball away in protest.’
‘The things these two get away with often leaves my jaw on the floor.
Very handsy and dirty players.’
‘I’m hoping Arteta surprises me and goes with a Partey-Rice-Nwaneri midfield. There is no point trying to beat Newcastle in their own game because their midfield is the most physical in the league.’
‘The midfield will decide this game they have thugs and would match us physically.
No Gordon for Newcastle is great for us he their most dangerous player.’
‘Ah I see Gordon played against Chelsea.
Arteta luck.’
’12:30 kick off, pretty rare for us, am I right in saying our records not the best?’
‘The time certainly helps, Geordies can’t drink a lot before. When City had the early kick off there the atmosphere was a bit flat.’
‘Chances are we suffocate Newcastle so Gordon doesn’t see much of the ball anyway.’
‘Must win really.
So glad this isn’t at night, think it’s the worst place to go at night…all their fat shirtless fans turn rabid under the lights and hate us for wanting rules followed.
Let’s not forget… Trophies since the Premiership began, Arsenal 14 v Newcastle 0
Relegations since the Premiership began, Newcastle 2 v Arsenal 0
No idea how their moronic fan base sees themselves as a big club, they do even less than Spurs (despite spending crazy money in the 1990s, they had the WORLD RECORD TRANSFER for a bit and still couldn’t even win a Community Shield lol)
Quote liked them pre takeover, just became a standard oil club now… wanting to illegally spend their way to the top.
We will win 3-1.’
‘Actually liked and respected Newcastle as club before. One of the clubs that really has the potential to be a big club without sheiks or russians. So sad to see their fans celebrating turning into a soulless club.’
‘Newcastle form wise we should really win, but I am aware that these mud wrestlers are willing to do whatever it takes to atleast claw a draw.’
‘Another Saka masterclass is loading.’
‘We’ll play the quick switching interplay with quick overlaps with the diamond formation near the ‘D’ for intercepts, we’ll win comfortably.’
‘Shame White just not fit enough to start but this team is easily good enough to beat Newcastle.’
THE WINNING GOAL:
‘Proper goal that, ffs.’
‘Great goal TVBF.’
‘What a goal by Isak.’
‘That’s what a proper striker does.’
‘Beautiful cross, old school.’
‘Quality goal tbf we could do with a striker like that instead of midfielders upfront.’
‘Wish we had Isak.’
‘Not gonna lie that was a top quality goal. Top quality cross and top quality finish.’
‘Hopefully this is Isak auditioning for his Arsenal move.’
‘On the plus side I prefer when we concede nice and early as opposed to late on. We can go up a level here and sustain it.’
‘Oh well, at least it wasn’t undeserved like Gordon’s goal last season.’
POST-MATCH:
‘Newcastle outplayed us completely, in every aspect of football.
They were faster, stronger, more aggressive.
They have won every duel.
Their energy level was higher.
Hall and Joelinton marked Saka, Livramento and Gordon marked Martinelli very well.’
‘Newcastle won every tackle.’
‘Newcastle seem to consistently have Artetas number in these away games. It’s interesting that they have tried to tweak their style of football recently but before kick off some of their fans noted they seemed to revert to the ultra denseivley solid structure of two seasons ago and it worked an absolute treat.’
‘Pope had nothing to do, Rice should of scored with the header at the end but choosing the wrong pass or not hitting the target simply not the quality of chance I expect.
Had a corner with Merino shot blocked on the line, but going 1 down to Newcastle away the breaking up of play by Newcastle, Howe did that last year and we didn’t learn that today. Our general passing was poor.
Dark arts that are never mentioned.’
‘Today was just like Bournemouth away even with 11 men. Newcastle deserved the win but we created nothing.’
‘A few weeks ago Saka was allowed to come more centrally, that’s gone out the window. We’re so predictable when we play like this. From the second Newcastle scored you could sense what sort of a game it was turning into.’
‘What a trash performance. We are out of the title race, in November. There are uncomfortable discussions that can be brought to the table, warranted discussions.’
‘They defended really well.
Some niggling things here and there like pulling our players back or feigning injury when losing the ball. But that is to be expected from them… they do the dark arts well.
The ref was annoying but I can’t really bother about them and their agendas anymore.’
‘Yeah Joelinton gets away with a hell of a lot of fouls and rarely gets carded.’
‘Bruno as well, it’s part of their strategy to slow down the game and get opposition players sent off.’
‘The one thing i look for when things arent going our way is sustained pressure, we had no shot on target, no final 3rd deliveries of note and no pinning back. Its like we are a midtable team hoping for a moment of success.’
‘The issue of Havertz going to the side and helping build the attack, even with small teams, needs to end.’
‘Did Pope even get tested even once today ?? lmao.’
‘Newcastle played well, don’t know why people are trying to downplay them.’
‘No, they were awful all game and we should have won easily if we played properly.’
‘All the silly plaudits for Newcastle rolling in now.’
‘They actually played well though and worked really hard.’
‘2nd season of straight regression, with money spent.
Questions need to be asked….’
‘Isaak won’t sign a new deal for newcastle, he put on a display today that should have edu getting the chequebook out.’
