Arsenal could make a move for a midfielder “in the final days” of the January window, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has told GIVEMESPORT.

The Premier League leaders have been linked with midfield options, but Romano insists it isn’t a priority for Arsenal.

What’s the latest transfer news involving Arsenal?

Having spent the backend of the summer 2022 transfer window chasing a midfielder, Arsenal were forced to stick with the options they already had, after deals fell through at the 11th hour. It was reported Arsenal had been eyeing up a £30 million deal for Youri Tielemans, with the Leicester star in the final 12 months of his contract.

A move for the Belgian international didn’t materialise, with Arsenal shifting attention to Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz instead. The Guardian reported last January deadline day that the Gunners were prepared to drop £25 million on the Brazilian international, but Villa stood firm and rejected Arsenal’s approach.

Obviously, missing out on a midfielder hasn’t appeared to harm Arsenal’s campaign too much, with Mikel Arteta’s side cruising at the top of the Premier League, while also having progressed top of their Europa League group. However, as Arteta and Edu look to bolster their squad ahead of the run-in, there are suggestions Arsenal could still target a midfielder this month, despite being low on the priority list.

What has Romano said about Arsenal’s transfer targets?

In an interview with GMS, Romano outlined Arsenal’s plan for midfield recruitment in January, hinting it could come down to the final days of the window.

“At the moment the priority is low for the midfielder,” Romano told GMS.

“I think it could be like last summer when they moved in the final days of the window for a midfielder.

“We had rumours on Tielemans for the whole window and then at the end, they tried for Douglas Luiz in the final hours and days of the window.”

Who are Arsenal’s realistic targets in midfield this month?

CBS journalist Ben Jacobs recently told GMS there’s a “strong likelihood” Arsenal land target Tielemans on a free transfer in the summer, when the 25-year-old’s contract expires at Leicester City. However, with Tielemans now on Newcastle’s radar, as per reports, there are suggestions Arsenal could accelerate a move for the midfielder this month, with Dean Jones revealing to GMS the Magpies’ interest could “spark Arsenal into action.”

Elsewhere, perennial Arsenal target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is also being mooted as a potential January target, with reports in Italy indicating a deal could be done. Milinkovic-Savic boasts over 350 senior appearances to his name and the Serbian international could bring the added experience Arsenal need to see them across the line in the Premier League.
