After consecutive 2-1 wins over Ipswich Town and Crawley Town, Arsenal recently secured top spot in their EFL Trophy group with a draw and penalty shootout win over Gillingham.

The bonus point for winning the shootout left Arsenal on eight, twice the points of second-place Gillingham – who also qualified for the next round.

Now we’re at the knockout stage of the competition, and the official EFL Trophy account confirmed on Friday that Arsenal will face League One side AFC Wimbledon.

Technically, Arsenal were drawn as the home side for the clash. However, as per the rules for u21 sides in this competition, they’ll play as the away side anyway.

Round Two fixtures will take place during the week commencing 7th December 2020. We should get the exact details before long.

It’s never an easy draw getting one of the League One sides, with AFC Wimbledon currently mid-table in their division. Wimbledon did lose their final group game to League Two Leyton Orient, though, scraping through to the next round by a point.

Joining the Arsenal u21s in the next round are the u21 sides for Leicester City, Wolves, Manchester United, Manchester City, Norwich City, and West Ham United.

Dropping out early are Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Liverpool, Leeds United, Southampton, Chelsea, West Bromwich Albion, Brighton, and Fulham. Chelsea are the biggest surprise, given this is their first group-stage elimination in the competition.

No u21 side has ever won the whole thing, so Arsenal have their work cut out for them from here on.
