Arsenal are set to part ways with Takehiro Tomiyasu following the mutual termination of his contract, according to Sky Sports News. The Japan international had a year remaining on his deal, with an option for an additional year, but after a long-term knee injury sidelined him for most of last season, a quiet conclusion to his time in North London appears imminent.

Tomiyasu managed just six minutes of football last season before undergoing surgery. His absence has raised ongoing concerns about his durability, and with Arsenal evolving under Mikel Arteta, it appears both club and player have decided on a clean break.

The 25-year-old arrived from Bologna in 2021 and made 84 appearances for the Gunners. While highly regarded for his professionalism and tactical discipline, his time in England has ultimately been curtailed by persistent injury issues.
Tomiyasu represented so much of what Arsenal needed when he arrived, composed on the ball, versatile across the backline and with the sort of quiet resolve that supporters appreciated. He was the kind of defender who made teammates better, who rarely sought the limelight but always embraced the responsibility.
Yet football can be cruel, and this feels more like a surrender to biology than a footballing decision. Injuries have stolen far too many key moments from Tomiyasu’s career in red and white. His potential was clear, but his availability never matched his ability.
The real frustration is not just the loss of a good player, but the feeling of incompletion. He never truly got the run of form or fitness needed to leave a lasting mark. And now, with Arsenal building towards a Champions League-ready squad, it feels as though one of the more selfless chapters is being quietly closed.
Supporters will wish him well, but they will also feel that the story deserved a better ending.
