However, David Ornstein of the Athletic reports that Holding will then leave the club.

Arsenal have been looking to trim their squad and Holding is surplus to requirements, with William Saliba coming in this summer and Lille’s Gabriel set to follow.

According to Ornstein, the Magpies will not have an option to make the move permanent.

Holding is still needed by Arsenal this weekend, with a number of players in quarantine following their summer breaks. Shkodran Mustafi, Pablo Marí and Calum Chambers are all injured but  expected to return in the upcoming months.

Arsenal signed Holding in 2016 and he has started in the club’s two FA Cup final wins since then. However, his progress was halted by an ACL injury in 2018 and he is yet to rediscover top form after returning from that injury last season.
