Arsenal have confirmed the permanent signing of David Raya from Brentford.

The Spanish goalkeeper joined the Gunners on loan for a fee of £3 million last summer with an option to make the move permanent for a further £27 million, which has now been exercised.

The news does not come as a surprise given the deal 12 months ago was rumoured to be put in place to avoid any issues with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, as well as his performances in Mikel Arteta’s side.

After displacing Aaron Ramsdale, who now faces an uncertain future at the club, in the lineup, the 28-year-old became the club’s undisputed No. 1, letting in just 31 goals in his 41 appearances in all competitions.

Raya was a big part of the Gunners’ Premier League-best defensive record and won the Golden Glove with 16 clean sheets.

The former Blackburn man is away with the Spanish national team at the European Championship, where he is the understudy to Unai Simón.
