Arsenal confirm Mesut Özil as new Number 10

Arsenal have confirmed that Mesut Özil will wear the number 10 shirt next season.

Özil had long coveted the number but was forced to bide his time with Jack Wilshere previously holding it.

However, after Wilshere made the decision not to renew his contract, the shirt became vacant and was duly snapped up.

Speaking about his new number, Özil told Arsenal.com: “It has never been a secret how special this number is to me.

“My childhood idol Zinedine Zidane wore this number and it is still the most characteristic one for the playmaker position.

“I’m looking forward to putting it on for the first time at Arsenal after the summer break!”

The German midfielder wore 10 at Real Madrid between 2011-2013 and has worn the number for Germany since 2016.
