He adds that the club are pushing to get the deal done this week having agreed on a contract until 2029.

Calafiori’s expected arrival could mean the departure of another defender in Jakub Kiwior, however.

According to a report from Mail Sport, the Gunners are willing to let the Polish international leave and will listen to permanent offers for the 24-year-old while are also open to letting him go out on loan.

It looks set to be a busy summer for manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu Gaspar, with Arsenal having also approached Wolves over a move for goalkeeper Dan Bentley.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein reports that the Gunners have expressed an interest in bringing in the 30-year-old but that Wolves will only sell if there is a “suitable” bid.

Elsewhere, Sky Sports say that Manchester United are confident of completing a deal to sign Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee.

United have reportedly made it clear that they will meet his £34m release clause and that extensive talks have taken place with Zirkzee’s representatives, with a “broad agreement” on terms with the player.

Fabrizio Romano also says United are close to agreeing a move for Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt, though fans of the German side have expressed their anger with the reports with Sky Germany claiming 60,000 people have signed a petition calling on the club to keep the Netherlands international.

The Sun, meanwhile, say both Manchester United and Arsenal are set for a £30m war over Ajax striker Brian Brobbey.
