Has a defender ever won the Golden Boot at a major tournament before?

England’s Millie Bright shared the honour with Spain’s Alexia Putellas at the Arnold Clark Cup but in terms of major tournaments or competitions, surely it hasn’t happened?

It might be about to.

Sweden defender Amanda Ilestedt, who has signed for Arsenal from PSG this summer, has struck three times in Sweden’s first two games at the Women’s World Cup.

After scoring the winner against South Africa earlier this week, the centre-back has netted twice against Italy on Saturday.

With all three of her strikes coming from corners, it seems opposition defenders just can’t get near the 30-year-old, who is now level with Brazil’s Ary Borges as the top scorer Down Under.
