Arsenal break Premier League substitution record

Arsenal have set a new Premier League record for goals created and scored by substitutes, following Leandro Trossard’s effort last weekend.

Harvey Downes reports on Twitter that when substitute Jakub Kiwior set up Leandro Trossard goal’s against Liverpool last Sunday, it was a record sixth time that the Gunners had seen two substitutes combine for a goal this season.

No team has ever seen two substitutes combine for six goals in a single Premier League season before, and Arsenal still have another 15 games to add to that tally.

The first of those six goals came all the way back in August, when Fabio Vieira set up Eddie Nketiah to give Arsenal a 2-1 lead over Fulham.

Vieira was the provider again for the second goal, as Gabriel Jesus scored off the bench to secure a win over Manchester United in September.

Next came Gabriel Martinelli’s vital winner over Manchester City in October, set up by Kai Havertz.

Martinelli was also the scorer of the next two goals, both against Crystal Palace in January, with Nketiah setting up one and Jorginho the other.

Finally, Trossard was assisted by Kiwior for last weekend’s goal against Liverpool.

Mikel Arteta has sometimes been criticised for his substitutions in the past, but there seems little reason to do so when the results are this good.

A few more goals from the bench will be key if Arsenal are going to pick up a trophy at the end of the season.
