Beth Mead has received an outpouring of support from fellow footballers after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

The 27-year-old sustained the injury while playing for Arsenal against Man United at the Emirates and will see a surgeon in the coming days to assess the severity of the problem.

It’s a crushing blow for Mead, who has been in the form of her life and has established herself as one of the best players in the world.

The forward helped England win Euro 2022 earlier this year and earned both the Golden Boot and the Player of the Tournament awards.

Mead was also runner-up in the Women’s Ballon d’Or and was voted the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year.

What have people said about Beth Mead’s injury?

Mead shared a statement on Twitter, where she expressed her devastation at getting injured.

“Obviously heartbroken by the news of my injury, unfortunately these things are part of the game.

“But I’ll be working hard to be back on the pitch as soon as possible. For now, I’ll be Arsenal and England’s biggest fan.

“Thanks so much for all the love and support.”

In response, a number of players shared their support, including Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas and Chelsea star Sam Kerr.

Kerr replied to Mead and wrote: “Sorry to hear, get back soon.”

Putellas, who is also out injured with an ACL injury right now, echoed Kerr’s words and said: “Be Strong @bmeado9, we will be back better.”

The official Lionesses account offered their support for the Euro 2022 hero as well.

“We know you’ll come back from this even stronger, @bmeado9,” they said.

Will Beth Mead be fit in time for the World Cup?

The big question right now is whether Mead will be fit in time for next year’s Women’s World Cup.

On average, an ACL injury usually has an eight to nine-month recovery time and the World Cup gets underway on July 20th, 2023.

A full recovery in time, therefore, seems unlikely at this stage, though we will know more in due course.

However, Mead will certainly miss the rest of the WSL season.

Only Aston Villa’s Rachel Daly and Manchester City’s Khadija Shaw have more goal contributions in the league this season than Mead – proving just how influential she has been for the Gunners.

Arsenal are currently three points behind leaders Chelsea with a game in hand, but Jonas Eidevall will now have to adapt to life without his star winger.
