Impressive Arsenal dazzle in NLD

Scorers: Mead 4′, Foord 71′, 82′

Arsenal beat rivals Tottenham at the Emirates 3-0 to ensure the title race with leaders Chelsea goes down to the wire.

It didn’t take long for the hosts to make their intentions known, either, as a solo run from an in-form Beth Mead opened the scoring just four minutes in. But the visitors almost hit back minutes later only to see Vivianne Miedema clear the ball off the line.

As time went on it continued to be a nervy match with Arsenal having the majority of the attempts but Tottenham were just as threatening down at the other end as Jessica Naz and Rachel Williams caused problems.

At 1-0 heading into the second half, the match was still up for grabs but Arsenal began to pull out all the stops, and Spurs’ defence alongside goalkeeper Tinja-Riikka Korpela couldn’t do much to stop them.

In the end, it was an inspired Caitlin Foord who secured the three points with a late brace – the second of which was a stunning curling effort from the top of the box to wrap things up 3-0.

Tottenham, meanwhile, had one chance to pull back a consolation goal but Angela Addison’s penalty hit the post.

Man City tested but thrash Birmingham

Scorers: Stanway 58′, 64′ Hemp 61′, Kennedy 76′, Kelly 83′, Coombs 87′

Manchester City stay in the hunt for a Women’s Champions League spot after a 6-0 win which relegated opponents Birmingham City.

The hosts were on the front foot for all of the first half with Lauren Hemp and Khadija Shaw causing problems in attack but the visitors were able to stifle all of City’s 10 attempts.

The best chance came within the opening four minutes but Lucy Bronze’s effort was cleared off the line before Emily Ramsey pulled off comfortable saves in goal to keep things deadlocked.

City’s dominance continued after the break and eventually, their pressure exploited the visitors which allowed Georgia Stanway to send a low drive into the net from 20 yards out for 1-0.

And with the deadlock finally broken the floodgates opened for the hosts with Hemp doubling things and Stanway securing a brace six minutes later.

Then to add insult to injury Alanna Kennedy, Chloe Kelly and Laura Coombs wrapped up a 6-0 win.

The two results mean the final day of Women’s Super League action will be intense with the title and Women’s Champions League spots still up for grabs.

Chelsea hold a one-point lead at the top over Arsenal while third-placed City sit two points above Manchester United (who play the leaders).
