In a recent report, The Sun claimed that Arsenal are eyeing a move for Barcelona full-back Joao Cancelo, who is currently playing on loan from Manchester City this summer. It has been stated that the Gunners are showing interest in recruiting the Portuguese talent when he returns to Man City from his loan spell at the Nou Camp.

Cancelo’s Impressive Loan Spell In Spanish Football

Cancelo is having a decent loan spell at the Catalan club and has done well to put in a string of eye-catching displays on the right side of their defence. The 29-year-old has found the back of the net on four occasions and earned four assists in 32 matches for Barca this season in all competitions.

The Portuguese talent has been a consistent performer on the right flank as he is averaging 2.1 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, 1.4 clearances, 1.0 shots, 1.2 key passes and 2.2 dribbles per game in La Liga. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball after making 83.5% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Spanish football (stats via whoscored).

Cancelo’s current deal at his parent club Man City will run out in the summer of 2027. Therefore, Arsenal would have to make a sizable offer if they are to snap the Portugal international up this summer.

What Will Cancelo Bring To Arsenal?

Cancelo loves a tackle and can time his challenges well to make some important interceptions for his team inside his half. He usually clears the danger when required and can shoot the ball with power and accuracy from long range.

The Portuguese sensation has got the eye to play a few decisive passes from the wide areas and is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet. He is primarily a right-back but can also operate as a left-back if told to do so.

Cancelo would no doubt enhance the quality of Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta’s match-day squad. He has what it takes to rival Ben White and Jakub Kiwior for a regular starting spot at the North London club in the coming seasons.
