Vivianne Miedema and Arsenal have confirmed that they reached agreement on a what is believed to be a new one-year extension that will keep her at the club next season.

With the FA WSL now finished, all eyes turned to Vivianne Miedema, who had been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona due to the fact her contract had expired.

The Athletic were informed around 10 days ago that the forward was filming content at the Emirates that would be used alongside an announcement of the extension later this month.

I assume that was this content:

“I think the most beautiful thing about the game is building something with a team and with people around you that you really want to be around,” said Vivianne.

“I do feel like I have got that at Arsenal. I feel like for me, winning titles with Arsenal will mean a lot more to me than winning them with another club at the moment. And that’s what I obviously hope to achieve with Arsenal.”

Head Coach Jonas Eidevall added: “Viv is a stellar talent and a hugely important player for this team, so it’s fantastic news that she is staying with us. As a club, our ambition is to win titles and compete at the highest level – we know Viv’s own ambitions are the same, and together we will give everything to achieve that.”

Head of Women’s Football Clare Wheatley said: “This is an important day for Arsenal Football Club. Viv is among the best players on the planet and has shown her quality year after year in the Arsenal jersey. We have ambitious targets here and Viv will play a key role in us reaching them moving forward.”

Miedema wants a chance to win the Champions League, a competition Arsenal qualified for next season due to their second-place finish in the league.

Back in March, Miedema told Algemeen Dagblad, “In the coming weeks, I have to get a feel for the right club.

“The door for Arsenal is definitely not closed yet. I would like to win the Champions League.

“I want to get the most out of it. That means I may have to take the next step. I’m 25 and that’s still quite young, but I’ve been around for a while.

“The years that are coming now officially belong to me, I have to spend them somewhere at a club that best suits my ambitions.”

Miedema is the FA WSL’s all-time leading goalscorer with 72 and finished the 21/22 season with 23 goals and nine assists in all competitions.
