Arsenal are interested in signing Mateo Retegui in the summer transfer window, according to CalcioMercato.
Arsenal are reported to have Retegui on their list for the summer, as the Gunners hunt for a new striker.
The Italian news outlet has claimed that Arsenal’s London and Premier League rivals Chelsea are also interested in the Atalanta striker, who, according to Italy manager Luciano Spalletti in The Guardian in October 2024 is “a very serious lad” and “lethal” inside the opposition’s box.
CalcioMercato has reported that Atalanta want at least €45 million (£38 million) in transfer fees for the 25-year-old Italy international striker, who has scored 25 goals and given five assists in 39 matches in all competitions so far this season, according to Transfermarkt.
The report has revealed that Retegui wants to score more than 30 goals this season.
The striker’s agents have reportedly received “several calls in recent months” from clubs that are interested in him and want to know if he would be willing to leave Atalanta in the summer transfer window.
While Retegui is having a truly wonderful season, Arsenal, linked with former Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino, should not rush into paying the €45 million (£38 million) needed to sign the Atalanta striker in the summer transfer window.
The 25-year-old scored nine goals and made three assists in 31 matches for Genoa last season.
Of course, not many strikers can score a lot of goals playing for a side like Genoa, but just one great season does not mean that Retegui is a ‘great’ striker.
Arsenal need to carefully weight up whether Retegui would be able to score the same number of goals next season and the next.
Consistency is something that the North London club have to look at when signing a striker in the summer transfer window.
