Arsenal ace Miedema picks up BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year accolade | OneFootball

Arsenal forward Vivianne Miedema has been crowned the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year for her achievements for club and country in 2021.

The BBC announced Miedema’s award win this morning, she beats Chelsea’s Sam Kerr and Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas to the award with those players finishing in second and third respectively.

Miedema became the Barclays FA Women’s Super League’s all-time top goalscorer during the current calendar year while she extended her record goal haul for The Netherlands. The forward also netted 10 goals for her country at the Olympic Games, ending the tournament as the top scorer. She scored four goals as The Netherlands defeated Zambia 10-3 in a fascinating group match in Rifu, Japan.

The BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year award is now into its seventh year and Miedema becomes the first Dutch player to win the prize. She picks up the award from Manchester City and England international full-back Lucy Bronze who won last season’s award.

Miedema is one of two players currently on Arsenal’s books to have won the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year award. Teammate Kim Little also won the award back in 2016.

Miedema’s goals have helped Arsenal to the top of this season’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League. She does have a bridge to gap in the goalscoring charts with the player being three goals adrift of the league’s top scorer Kerr.
