Arsenal could still sign PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo before the transfer window shuts on September 1, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Gunners are believed to be in the market for attacking reinforcements after missing out on Raphinha, who opted to join Barcelona over them earlier in the summer.

What is the latest news involving Gakpo?

Football.London have reported that Gakpo is a player on Arsenal’s radar after it became clear Bayer Leverkusen’s Moussa Diaby is determined to stay put for the 2022/23 campaign.

“I’ve made my decision and will play for Bayer Leverkusen again next season,” confirmed the France international in a recent interview, ending speculation over this future.

However, securing Gakpo’s signature could also prove to be difficult due to his desire for regular game time ahead of the World Cup and the competition posed by his other potential suitors.

The Mirror have claimed that Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is eager to bring his compatriot to Old Trafford after becoming frustrated in his attempts to land Antony from Ajax.

It’s believed that PSV are set to demand £40 million for Gakpo, who is also on the radar of Leeds United, following his outstanding displays last season.

What has Jones said about Gakpo?

Jones believes that signing Diaby is going to be a ‘hard’ deal to complete but that a move for Gakpo is still ‘one to look out for’ in what remains of the current window.

He told GiveMeSport: “Diaby is going to be a hard one. Leverkusen basically just don’t want to lose him at this point, they feel like they’re going to have a good season, so I don’t think that doors going to open.

“Cody Gakpo is still one to look out for if they look abroad for the signing.”

Do Arsenal need Gakpo?

Arsenal currently have Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Nicolas Pepe, Reiss Nelson and summer signing Marquinhos to call upon in the wide areas.

Nevertheless, Pepe is expected to seek pastures new over the coming weeks after failing to impress in north London, Nelson has been tipped to predominantly feature in the cup competitions and Marquinhos has been brought in with an eye on the future.

Gakpo, on the other hand, has shown he is capable of producing some top performances in the present, registering 21 goals and 15 assists in 46 appearances for PSV last term.

The Netherlands international could provide some quality cover and competition on the flanks for Arsenal, therefore, helping Mikel Arteta’s side continue their progression on the pitch.
