Arne Slot has confirmed he wants to become the next Liverpool manager, even sensationally expressing a confidence that his wish will soon become a reality as talks take place.
The Feyenoord boss, previously a target for Tottenham Hotspur last summer, emerged as the leading contender to replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield earlier this week.
Liverpool then kicked off negotiations with the Dutch side on Wednesday, leading Slot to then go public with his honest desire on Thursday.
"It seems clear to me that I would like to work [at Liverpool]," he told ESPN.nl.
"The clubs are negotiating, so I'm still on hold. We have to wait until an agreement is reached, but I have every confidence in that."
Liverpool captain and compatriot Virgil van Dijk has already given his backing to Slot.
"I think Arne Slot is perhaps one of the better Dutch coaches at the moment and I think the way he plays and the philosophy he has means he could be a Liverpool coach," Van Dijk admitted. “I also read and hear is that it is far from over and we'll see. Next [season] we'll focus on that."
Slot first emerged as a head coach at second tier club Cambuur, before coming to wider prominence at AZ in the Eredivisie. He ended up getting sacked by AZ in December 2020 after negotiating a pre-arranged move to Feyenoord for the following season, but has delivered the Eredivisie, KNVB Cup and a European final since joining the club. He also landed successive Rinus Michels Award in 2022 and 2023, the prize given out to the best coach in Dutch football each season.
