The champions of Europe took on the champions of South America to see which continent could take the bragging rights.

This was only the third time a game like this had happened with Europe and South American claiming one win each.

Lionel Messi started for Argentina as the Albiceleste hoped to capitalise on an ageing Italy defence that included Giorgio Chiellini, who was playing his last ever game for his country.

It was the Azzurri who had the best of the opening exchanges with Giacomo Raspadori having a decent effort from outside the area saved early on.

It wasn’t until the 28 minute mark that Argentina managed to get into the game and they made it pay immediately. Messi made some space down the right, squared to Lautaro Martinez and the Inter man swept home.

And with just seconds left of the first half they doubled their lead as Di Maria raced in on goal and dinked the ball over Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Into the second half and Di Maria almost got his second of the night but an outstretched Donnarumma arm tipped his effort over the bar.

Messi was still at his superb best but despite a number of great runs and a few chances, the Paris Saint-Germain forward could not get his goal.

But he did set up Dybala right at the death to add a third and hand Argentina the trophy.
