With tonight’s victory, Argentina are now on 28 points and now require just a single win to punch their ticket to the 2022 World Cup.

Without Lionel Messi in the starting XI (he would come on in the 76th minute), there were concerns Argentina would struggle to produce a meaningful result in Montevideo.

However, it took only seven minutes for Ángel Di María to produce a magnificent curling effort into the top corner.

Paulo Dybala did well to force a turnover deep in the attacking third before supplying Di María with the opportunity.

Despite being outshot by a 19-7 margin, Argentina won in the trenches, owning 65% of the possession and winning the only category that counts.

Argentina will have a chance to clinch their place in some style on Tuesday night as they will host Brazil at the Estadio del Bicentenario.
