The Pilgrims may well be waving goodbye to these names when their contract comes to an end in June
Plymouth Argyle have a number of players set to leave the club at the end of their contract this summer, with the Pilgrims still unsure of which division they will be playing in next season.
Miron Muslic’s side currently sit in the relegation zone with 12 league games remaining in the Championship season, with three points currently sitting between them and the safety of 21st position.
Whether they stay up or go down is anybody’s guess from here on in, but if it is anything like the previous campaign, we can expect things to go right down to the wire in terms of sealing their fate.
Once their destiny has been fulfilled, they can continue to make decisions regarding their players, but right now there are five players set to walk out the door at Home Park as a free agent come July 1 this year.
Jordan Houghton has experienced something of a revival of late, with the former Chelsea midfielder being thrown back into the starting lineup since the arrival of Muslic earlier this year.
The 29-year-old struggled for game time under previous boss Wayne Rooney, and has consequently only started a handful of league matches this season, with Adam Randell and Darko Gyabi preferred for the first-half of the campaign.
The January signing of Malachi Boateng from Hearts suggests Muslic may have his own ideas about midfield options going forward, and despite featuring prominently of late, he looks set to depart Devon as things stand.
After signing a two-year deal upon the Greens’ promotion to the Championship back in the summer of 2023, Mustapha Bundu looks to be coming to the end of his time as a Pilgrim.
The Sierra Leone international has played in every position across the front line during his time in Devon, with his latest reincarnation being as something of a target man under Muslic, having already played in a No.10 role as well as a winger.
While he is something of a crowd favourite, there is the feeling that Argyle can do a lot better in terms of attacking options during their summer recruitment drive, leaving his future very much up in the air.
Julio Pleguezuelo is another player who has had his own personal redemption arc this season, having gone from a forgotten face to one of the first names on the team sheet around the turn of the year.
The Spaniard had to wait until October to get his first taste of league action under Rooney, before becoming something of a mainstay as departures and injuries left the Greens light on the ground in terms of defensive personnel.
Injury issues have played their part during the former Arsenal man’s stint in Devon, and it will be intriguing to see if a last-minute change of heart may be made regarding his future after the courage and dedication shown during his performances.
Young goalkeeper Zak Baker looks set to leave Home Park this summer, having never been able to earn competitive minutes during his time as an Argyle player.
The academy graduate signed a one-year extension to his contract last summer, but with Conor Hazard and Daniel Grimshaw ahead of him in the pecking order, no one can blame him for wanting to find alternative employment for the season ahead.
Similarly to Baker, Will Jenkins-Davies signed a one-year extension to his deal during the previous off-season, having been largely effected by injury in the previous campaign.
The young prospect undoubtedly has talent in his boots, but whether that is of Championship or League One standard is still up for debate, given his performances on loan at National League South Torquay United this season.
A run of five goals in five games saw him catch fire around Christmas time, and he continues to play his part for a Gulls side who are competing for the play-offs in the sixth tier, as his days contracted to Home Park tick away.
A return to Plainmoor on a permanent basis can’t be ruled out for the 20-year-old, who could well prove Argyle were wrong to let him go in the years to come, but a parting of ways seems like the correct decision at this moment in time.
