Antony hasn’t adapted to English football as quickly as many Manchester United fans hoped.
After the Brazil international scored in his first three Premier League games against Arsenal, Manchester City and Everton, supporters had the highest of hopes for the £85 million signing.
But since that initial bright start, the going has been rather tough for Antony.
He hasn’t scored a goal in his last eight Premier League appearances and the overall performances haven’t been great.
Darren Bent was heavily critical of Antony’s recent display in United’s 3-2 defeat away at table-toppers Arsenal.
“All tricks and flicks, no substance at the minute,” he said on talkSPORT. “He’s doing all this stuff but he’s not going past anyone. It’s not like he’s doing a trick to manipulate the ball to go past someone, he’s just doing it for the sake of it.
“A little bit like the spin, at the time I was like ‘ah come on it’s only a spin’.”
After an underwhelming performance at the Emirates, the onus was on Antony to showcase some improvement against Forest on Wednesday evening.
And in the eyes of many United supporters, the youngster did just that.
While it certainly wasn’t a masterclass by Antony at the City Ground, there were a number of positive signs.
He looked sharp out on the right wing and it was his well-aimed shot that paved the way for Wout Weghorst to make it 2-0 on the night.
Check out Antony’s individual highlights…
There’s certainly cause for optimism with regards to Antony in a United shirt.
It might take him another full season to get up to full speed, but when he does, the 22-year-old could very well wreak havoc on a regular basis.
Here’s how some United fans reacted to Antony’s performance against Forest on Twitter…
They’re certainly not losing faith in him just yet – and rightly so.
But one thing Antony really has to work on is his lack of ambidexterity.
Sure, most footballers aren’t completely two-footed, however, Antony is currently among the most one-footed at the highest level of the game.
And unless you have the natural talent of Arjen Robben, which Antony – like 99% of others – probably doesn’t, that is a major issue.
