Manchester United’s draw against Burnley kept up the theme of the season where it’s one tiny step forward after a win followed by a giant step backwards.

However, there was one glimmer of hope for Erik ten Hag, which is when his gamble of ultimate trust in Antony paid off.

The Brazilian’s well-taken finish allowed United to take the lead and continue something of a minor uptick in form.

Of course, considering the absolute dire run he was in the midst of earlier, finding an uptick is not a very high bar but it is nonetheless a positive.

The winger spoke to reporters after the game and addressed his poor run of form and the critics that have come with it.

He appeared to brush off the critics and said that he knows his worth which is why he doesn’t think much of people who doubt him.

At the same time, he acknowledged that the noise around him would be a lot quieter, especially with regards to his transfer fee, if his performances were up to scratch.

He said: “It doesn’t really impact me because I know my worth.

“The money is the money and obviously everyone speaks about it but no one would if the performances of everyone and myself were at the top.”

Although he did suggest that he uses the criticism to drive himself further and work harder to improve and prove his doubters wrong.

He said: “So it’s something that is just a way of working harder, knowing I can get better. I know my worth and I will. As I said, the critics are going to exist and it’s something that makes me want to work harder, prove to myself first.

“I’m going to keep working, giving everything for the group because it’s most important to have a good mentality and to be focused.”

Antony’s performances this season have often mirrored United’s fate as both have been extremely inconsistent and frustrating for the fans.

The view is now towards the FA Cup final in May and hopefully consolidating the sixth place in the standings.

From there on, next season and a marked improvement have to be on the agenda for the club and the players.
