Rudiger managed to head the ball into the net, securing Real Madrid’s place in the Champions League knockout stages in the process, but was left dazed and covered in blood.

“What doesn't kill you makes you stronger,” Rudiger tweeted late on Tuesday evening. “I am okay - thanks for all your messages.”

He then posted a photo of himself on the flight home alongside the caption: “We Alive”. A big bandage covered most of his face.

Rudiger’s heroics will have further endeared him to everyone at the Bernabeu - especially the club’s fans.

He well and truly put his body on the line for the team.

David Alaba, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Eden Hazard all came to the room to check on their injured teammate, whose cut was stitched up by the medical staff.

It’s been reported that Rudiger required 20 stitches to stop the bleeding.

The aforementioned Real Madrid players looked genuinely concerned for their teammate. Kroos and Modric both struggled to watch as Rudiger was patched up by the medics.

They stayed with Rudiger until he was stitched up and ready to make his way to the away team dressing room.
