Following the senior team call-ups yesterday, it was time to learn which players would be representing Germany at the highest youth level on Friday. The day began with news that Germany U21 head coach Antonio di Salvo – in charge since Stefan Kuntz’s departure in autumn 2021 – had extended his own contract until 2027.
Di Salvo and the Germany U21s will contest two friendlies over the March international break. Having already qualified for the UEFA 2025 European U21 championship in June, the team will tune up against the Slovakian and Spanish U21s. The German U21s won two European titles (2017 and 2021) under Kuntz.
Under di Salvo, there was an embarrassing group stage exit in June 2023. After this, however, di Salvo’s charges have gone undefeated in 18 fixtures (13 qualifiers and 5 friendlies) since. Di Salvo’s current situation is regrettably influenced by the coming Club World Cup in June.
Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and RB Salzburg will be participating in the parallel tournament. For this reason, Maximilian Beier (BVB), Tom Bischof (moving from TSG Hoffenheim to FCB in the summer) and Leandro Morgalla (Salzburg) are not part of the squad.
Jonas Urbig (Bayern) and Paul Wanner (on loan at Heidenheim from Bayern) have been called up despite the fact that they may be traveling with Bayern to the USA-based tournament.
Jamil Siebert (Fortuna Düsseldorf), Joshua Quarshie (SpVgg Greuther Fürth) and Nelson Weiper (Mainz 05) return to di Salvo after missing out on the November call-ups.
Nürnberg’s Casper Jander and Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Lukas Ullrich have both been called up to the U21s for the first time.
Goalkeepers: Noah Atubolu (Freiburg), Jonas Urbig (Bayern), Tjark Ernst (Hertha BSC)
Defenders: Bright Arrey-Mbi (SC Braga), Nathaniel Brown (Eintracht Frankfurt), Nnamdi Collins (Eintracht Frankfurt), Tim Oermann (VfL Bochum), Joshua Quarshie (SpVgg Greuther Fürth), Max Rosenfelder (SC Freiburg), Jamil Siebert (Fortuna Düsseldorf), Lukas Ullrich (Borussia Mönchengladbach)
Midfields: Jens Castrop (FC Nürnberg), Brajan Gruda (Brighton & Hove Albion), Caspar Jander (FC Nürnberg), Ansgar Knauff (Eintracht Frankfurt), Eric Martel (FC Köln), Paul Nebel (Mainz 05), Rocco Reitz (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Jan Thielmann (FC Köln), Paul Wanner (FC Heidenheim)
