Antonio Conte is keen to bring his former player Ivan Perisic to Tottenham Hotspur in 2022…

What’s the word?

That’s according to SPORT1 journalist Patrick Berger, who delivered a fresh transfer update on social media this week.

“A transfer of Ivan Perisic back to the Bundesliga (#BVB or Wolfsburg) won’t happen. The contract of the 32yo Croatian @Inter runs out in [the] summer. There are talks to extend. But P. is also thinking about to join Tottenham where he could work with his ex-boss, Antonio Conte.”

The Italian head coach has previously made no secret of his admiration for the 32-year-old attacker in the past, claiming: “Perisic is an excellent player with outstanding physical strength. He is good at beating (his man). He has the ability to play one-on-one. I need Perisic like this. He will keep because he has quality.”

Valued at £9m by Transfermarkt, Perisic is out of contract in the summer, so would cost Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy nothing in terms of transfer fees at the end of the season, though it remains to be seen how much the 32-year-old would command if Spurs were to make a move in January.

Conte’s perfect signing

Given Conte’s familiarity with the Croatia midfielder, Perisic could be one of his dream additions, especially as the Italian has noted the lack of experience and leadership amongst the current squad.

“We’ve still got a team that’s very young despite having players who have been here for many years,” he told Sky Sports last month.

Perisic has made well over 300 appearances across the Italian and German top-flights, as well as playing 70 times across both of UEFA’s major European competitions, via Transfermarkt.

That’s not to mention his 111 caps at international level and eight major honours, including a Champions League winner’s medal.

This season, he has continued to prove that he has still ‘got it’, having provided three goals and two assists across 18 appearances, per Transfermarkt, whilst he ranks as Inter’s joint-fifth best performer in Serie A, averaging a WhoScored rating of 7.07.

Perisic actually leads the team for interceptions (1.5) and dribbles (1.1) per game, which suggests at 32, he still has the physical capabilities to get up and down the wing to contribute at either end of the pitch.

It’s no wonder his former manager Luciano Spalletti said that the 6 foot 1 dynamo’s “physique is that of a horse” to Inter TV (via SempreInter).

He outlined: “Ivan is a reality for this club with both feet. He enjoys staying with the club, he’s the most incredible professional. He’s one of those that even after training is over, he works out on his own for about an hour, hour and a fifteen minutes. I’ll repeat, an incredible professional both physically and mentally.”
