Antoine Griezmann has sent a message of support to Joshua Kimmich after Germany's shock World Cup elimination.

A 4-2 win over Costa Rica in Germany's final Group E group game was not enough to take them through to the knockout stages, as Japan sensationally beat Spain 2-1 to win the group and qualify for the round of 16.

That surprise loss for Spain rendered Germany's win over Costa Rica insignificant, as Luis Enrique's side boasted a vastly superior goal difference after their 7-0 mauling of Luis Fernando Suarez's side on matchday one - meaning they were the ones to qualify in second place on four points.

Germany's exit marks the second consecutive World Cup that they have failed to progress beyond the group stages, though manager Hansi Flick would not be drawn on his future in the immediate aftermath of the game.

Kai Havertz has spoken of Germany's campaign being like a 'horror movie', while Joshua Kimmich told Bild: "For me personally, this is the worst day of my career.

"I'm afraid I'll fall into a hole. It makes you think, these failures are connected to my person. We messed up in 2018, then we blew up the Euros last year."

Those comments have prompted Griezmann to tweet a message of support to Kimmich, with the Frenchman telling the 27-year-old: "You are a great player! You will be up again, Joshua."

Griezmann is enjoying a slightly better time of it at the World Cup, as France have already sealed their place in the round of 16 after topping Group D. They did surprisingly lose to Tunisia in their final group game, though, after Didier Deschamps opted to make nine changes with their passage to the knockout stages already secure.

France face Poland in Sunday's 3pm kick-off for a place in the quarter-final.
