English referee Anthony Taylor has been elected as one of the best match officials in the world in 2023.
Despite his controversial decision-making in the Europa League final in Budapest which saw him miss a glaring penalty for Roma, Taylor was inserted in the list compiled by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics for the best referees and their performances in the last calendar year.
In first place is the Polish referee Szymon Marciniak who oversaw the World Cup final between Argentina and France: the 42 year old won the award with 175 points, followed by the Italian official Daniele Orsato with 95 and the French Clement Turpin with 64.
Completing the top 5 are Michael Oliver and, indeed, Anthony Taylor – both with 36 points to their names.
