The right-back was on the pitch until the 48th minute and contributed to George Hirst’s maiden international goal by delivering a precise first-time pass into the box, which Che Adams redirected to the Ipswich Town striker before turning the ball into the net.
It was always going to be a comfortable evening for Celtic’s newest recruit Doohan considering the low-quality of Scotland’s opponents. It has been quite the few weeks for the former Hoops academy product who earned his first cap for his country yesterday evening.
Reports indicate that Doohan will return to Celtic this summer to take over as the Scottish Premiership champions’ third-choice goalkeeper, succeeding Scott Bain who joined Falkirk last week.
Speaking to the BBC, Steve Clarke shared the words he said to Doohan prior to his Scotland debut tonight: “Go out and do what you do and be the goalkeeper you are, that’s all you can say,” said the Scotland manager.
Scotland’s focus now shifts to the World Cup qualifiers starting in September, beginning with an ominous away match against Denmark in Copenhagen.
Kieran Tierney, set to rejoin Celtic this summer under a pre-contract agreement, missed the win over Liechtenstein, as did Serie A winner Scott McTominay. “Scott [McTominay] and Kieran both came into camp carrying some little issues over from the season,” said Clarke.
“So I think if we had a longer turnaround between the games, they might have had a chance, but listen, it’s the end of the season for those two.”
“The most important thing is to have a good rest over the summer and come back flying in the autumn.”
It was a much-needed win for Clarke after Friday night’s disastrous display against Iceland at Hampden. There seems to be an apathy around the national team just now heading into the World Cup qualifying campaign, and whether Clarke can change that feeling remains to be seen.
