In a controversial transfer, Anthony Gordon has made the approximately 150-mile trip north from Everton to play for high-flying Newcastle.
The total fee is around £45m, making Gordon Newcastle’s second-most expensive player after Alexander Isak, who they bought in the summer.
The move has proved a rather bitter one that perfectly sums up the current state of Everton Football Club. Upon hearing of Newcastle’s interest, Gordon refused to play for the club again and stopped turning up to training.
Everton are in dire need of a win at the moment both on and off the pitch and Gordon’s cruel exit from his boyhood club sums up much larger issues. The club currently find themselves 19th in the table having just sacked manager Frank Lampard and not won a league game since October.
In contrast, Newcastle are unbeaten in their last 15 matches and currently sit third in the Premier League table. An unthinkable position given their start to last season, but new owners and fantastic work from Eddie Howe and his team have completely turned the fortunes of the club around.
Newcastle will be hoping that the signing of Gordon can help them keep their momentum up as they hunt for Champions League football.

It’s fair to say that in the match between Everton and Newcastle earlier this season, Gordon certainly ruffled a few feathers as he was involved in an intense stand-off with essentially half the Newcastle team.
Plenty of fans have now brought up the incident with Gordon signing for the club and Gordon’s new teammates have been getting involved too.
Callum Wilson kicked off proceedings by posting a number of photos of the incident alongside the caption: “If you can’t beat em, join em.”
Kieran Trippier then followed things up with a similar post as he included a video of the confrontation along with the words: “Here we go. Welcome bro @anthonygordon.”
Trippier was the one who had began the bust up in the previous meeting between the pair as he challenged 21-year-old Gordon for the soft way he had gone down during a Dan Burn tackle inside the box.
The pair then went head-to-head with Gordon saying something along the lines of, “Get out my face you stupid little t***” to the 32-year-old. Then Fabian Schar and Nick Pope stepped in to push Gordon away.
Fortunately for Gordon, it seems the Newcastle team now see the funny side of the situation judging by these posts and he seems to have taken it well too as he reacted to both posts with comments and laughing emojis.
In other good news for Newcastle fans this week, Trippier has also extended his contract with the club to 2025 having been a fantastic player for the Magpies since joining last January.
Newcastle fans will be hoping Gordon and the Newcastle players can quickly put their feud behind them, and judging by these social media posts, this won’t be a problem. Everybody has seemingly taken the events in good humour and now it’ll be interesting to see how Gordon settles in at St James’ Park.
He clearly possesses fantastic talent, but he can go down rather easily at times and his move away from Everton calls up issues over his attitude. Only time will tell, but Gordon certainly has the ability to make an impact at Newcastle, not just this season, but long into the future.
