Anthony Gordon to Liverpool claim – We have finally hit rock bottom

Whilst Anthony Gordon was over in Germany sitting on the bench watching England, we saw endless headlines linking him with a move to Liverpool.
So the story went…
With Newcastle United needing to make up a PSR shortfall of £50m+ by 30 June 2024 for the latest three-season period (2021/22, 2022/23 and 2023/24), Newcastle United making worst-case scenario hypothetical plans, which allegedly could have seen a star player having to be sold if one or more squad players couldn’t be moved on.
Anthony Gordon one of those star players who found themselves making headlines as a potential hypothetical sale, if it all goes wrong, with Liverpool the club he was most linked with, in these June 2024 headlines. Alexander Isak and Chelsea, another hypothetical deal that was claimed could potentially happen if it all went wrong for Newcastle United.
Who knows what the truth was BUT in any case, all of that nonsense reporting swept away (or it should have been…) when young squad players Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh were sold for a reported combined £68m, more than covering any PSR shortfall, with Anderson a homegrown player and Minteh having cost only £7m the previous summer.
Whilst the Chelsea/Isak headlines swiftly faded away after Newcastle United had sorted their PSR shortfall in June, that didn’t deter the Liverpool media whatsoever.
Both the traditional (newspapers etc) media and the proliferation of modern-day Liverpool-related sites, all desperate to keep the transfer nonsense traffic coming their way.
Throughout July and into August still non-stop, headline after headline claiming Anthony Gordon could imminently be signing for Liverpool.
To make this ‘believable’ for their audience, the Liverpool sites/newspapers making laughable claims on Gordon’s valuation and what Newcastle United would supposedly be willing to sell him for. Rather than the £100m+ that would be the reality of what the Newcastle United owners would insist on, if for whatever reason they did decide to sell him, instead, the Liverpool media wanted their audience to believe that Newcastle would be willing to take £30m and Joe Gomez (Gordon having cost NUFC £45m a year and a half earlier as a 21 who had achieved next to nothing by then and helping to develop into one of the Premier League’s best attacking players)!
Yes, Newcastle United are sure to want to sell their 2023/24 player of the year who got double-figure PL goals and assists last season, in return for £30m and a Liverpool squad player who has only averaged 11 Premier League starts per season in his nine years at Liverpool, averaging only 10 PL starts per season these past four years.
Anyway, just when you think the Liverpool media had scraped the very bottom of the barrel, they have proved us all wrong.
This is what the Liverpool Echo has published on Wednesday morning (7 August 2024):
So what could be this ‘one-word Newcastle message’ from Anthony Gordon be, that ‘fires clear Liverpool transfer hint’, what do Newcastle United fans need to be terrified of? What on earth has Wor Anthony said??
Yes. Anthony Gordon on Tuesday posted those images of himself having returned to the NUFC training ground, ready to join Newcastle United pre-season preparations, along with that ‘clear Liverpool transfer hint’ when he declared ‘Back’ on Tyneside to prepare for the new season WITH Newcastle United.
How woeful is this from the Liverpool Echo???
Whatever next? Can the bottom of that barrel be scraped any deeper?? Watch this space.
