Anthony Gordon has been absolutely superb for Newcastle United.

Player of the season so far?

Well, put it this way, I don’t think anybody is ahead of him as things currently stand.

Yet another brilliant Eddie Howe signing, with so many Newcastle fans looking pretty foolish after instantly writing off a 21 year old Anthony Gordon, before giving him the chance to get properly fit and adjust.

A young player having been treat disgracefully by Everton and their fans.

Anthony Gordon scapegoated for the total mess at Everton, as they chose to sell him in a very late and desperate, but doomed, attempt to try and avoid breaking FFP / PSR rules.

Well, all that is in the past.

I don’t think any Newcastle United fan (nor indeed any honest neutral, even Everton fan…) believes that Anthony Gordon is anything other than a very talented hard working young player with electric pace, who is scoring and creating goals for fun this season.

In 29 Premier League starts this season, plus one PL sub appearance, Anthony Gordon has had 18 direct goal involvements, scoring ten and getting eight assists.

Having played 2,469 PL minutes this season so far, that is an average of a direct goal involvement every 137 minutes. Basically averaging two of these every three games’ worth of PL minutes.

Gordon is also showing his versatility.

Playing through the middle when asked to, scoring against the likes of Arsenal when doing so.

Then on Saturday Eddie Howe moved Anthony Gordon to the right, to accommodate Harvey Barnes on the left.

The result

A 4-0 hammering of Tottenham, with Anthony Gordon man of the match, scoring one and getting two assists.

Gordon showing yet another facet of his game when taking most of the set-pieces against Tottenham, Schar scoring his header from a Gordon corner.

Surely even gormless Gareth Southgate must see he has no alternative but to select Anthony Gordon for this summer’s European Championships in Germany… mustn’t he???

To not do so would be an absolute disgrace.

However… I am seeing plenty of journalists, pundits and so on, still talking about Anthony Gordon as though he is an outside bet to make the England squad this summer. This despite how he impressed when at last getting a chance in March when playing against Brazil and Belgium.

These ‘experts’ reckoning that the likes of Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish are still ahead of Anthony Gordon when it comes to the crunch with Gareth Southgate and England.

Anthony Gordon with 18 direct goal involvements in the Premier League this season, ten goals and eight assists.

Marcus Rashford with nine PL direct goal involvements, scoring seven and two assists.

Whilst Jack Grealish four PL direct goal involvements this season, three goals and one assist.

Are they (journalists / pundits) for real?

Anthony Gordon must be a no-brainer for even Gareth Southgate and an absolute disgrace if he isn’t on that plane to Germany.
