Anthony Gordon knows it – So did I last August

At the beginning of the 2023/24 season, the Editor asked some of the regular contributors on The Mag if there was a particular Newcastle United player that we would like to choose to write an article about.

Basically, it was about expressing our own hopes and aspirations for this particular player and how we thought they would fare.

I chose Anthony Gordon.

I thought he had somewhat struggled after joining from Everton at the close of the January transfer window in 2023.

We had paid big bucks and so Eddie Howe definitely thought there was a player in there.

Some of our supporters initially didn’t share his optimism but I wasn’t one of them.

I could see he was nowhere near fit enough having come from a mediocre Premier League club.

I also never agreed with this ‘scouse scallywag, charva’ image that he seemed to be getting laden with.

Anthony Gordon went away with the England under 21s last summer and was Player of the Tournament as the national ‘men’s’ set-up finally won something, the under 21s Euros.

He was now brimming with confidence by the time he joined up with his Newcastle teammates for the pre-season tournament in America.

By the beginning of the season, Anthony Gordon was as fit as a butcher’s dog and raring to go.

I predicted that Anthony would be a big and very important player for United in 2023/24.

I already knew he was quite a clever lad. One of the lads had even bumped into him coming off Tynemouth beach and had said that he was very approachable and friendly.

‘Flash’ never looked back after we demolished Aston Villa at St James’ Park on the opening day of the season.

He has improved his finishing and his positional awareness and anticipation.

He got into double figures in both goals and assists and scored crucial winning goals against Arsenal and Manchester United.

No one is ever going to forget his screamer from three yards out against Arteta’s cry babies are they?

Gordon is now a full England international after forcing his way into Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

That’s no mean feat considering Southgate’s blatant bias towards home counties players and those residing in the north west.

Flash though is now surely a shoe-in for the Euros.

Anthony Gordon is Newcastle United’s official Player of the Year for 2023/24, and has proved all of the doubters wrong.

He is quite rightfully adored by our fanbase and you can tell that the feeling is mutual.

Anthony has proved that he is a level headed, intelligent and mature young man whenever he has been interviewed, or whilst out performing public duties for the club.

He’s ours and he is going to be at Newcastle United for many years to come.

The recent Liverpool nonsense drummed up by the media is pure wishful thinking and was designed to unsettle the player and disrupt Newcastle.

Anthony Gordon is a star in stripes and well on the way to becoming a Newcastle United legend.
