Gordon had been linked with a move away from Goodison Park since last summer when Chelsea were extremely keen on his signature, but a move did not materialise as the Toffees were holding out for £60m.

The Blues were still interested in the Everton academy graduate this month, but Newcastle have moved swiftly to snap him up in what could prove a coveted move for the Magpies.

The 21-year-old has signed a long-term contract at St James’ Park and becomes Newcastle’s first signing of the January transfer window.

“Since I heard of the interest, I was always convinced Newcastle were for me,” Gordon told NUFC TV after signing on the dotted line.

“I think the fan base and the city really suits me as a person. The way the team are playing under the gaffer at the minute really suits me, and the club just look like they’re heading in the right direction.

“I feel like it’s a really big step. People haven’t seen what I’m capable of yet. I think under the gaffer, and the way the club’s going, I can really excel here.”

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe had been keen on signing a new forward after seeing Chris Wood complete a move to Nottingham Forest.

Howe praised the England Under-21 international upon his arrival, labelling him an exciting player.

“I’m delighted to sign Anthony – he’s a top, top talent,” Howe said. “I’m really excited to work with him, to develop him, and I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do in a Newcastle shirt.”

Gordon has now become the Magpies’ second most expensive signing after failing to turn up to three Everton training sessions this week in an attempt to force a transfer.

Newcastle prioritised him over Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech, and it remains to be seen if the Magpies will still look to sign the Moroccan this month, especially with the Blues reluctant to see him join them.

Gordon’s acquisition takes Newcastle’s spending spree close to £250m since the Saudi-based investors took over the club in October 2021.

The Liverpool-born forward could make his debut for the Magpies when they take on West Ham United at St. James’ Park on Saturday.
