Former La Masia product Oriol Soldevila Puig struck a hat-trick against his former side to take Intercity’s Copa del Rey clash to extra time, only for Ansu Fati to deliver the winner for Barcelona.
Here’s what went down.
Scorers: Soldevila Puig 59′, 74′ 86′; Araújo 4′, Dembélé 73′, Raphinha 77′, Fati 103′
Barcelona found the back of the net almost immediately as Ronald Araújo rose up with a big header from a Pablo Torre corner to open the scoring.
Third-tier Intercity were not ready to lie down though, as a quick counter-attack allowed Aarón Piñán to round Iñaki Peña only for goalscorer Araújo to clear off the line.
Another set-piece from Barcelona almost doubled their lead just before the half-hour mark as a free-kick from Memphis flicked up off the wall and hit the top of the crossbar.
Despite their fast start, Barça were only a goal to the good at the break, as Ferran Torres rolled his shot wide just before the half-time whistle after Ousmane Dembélé put him through on goal.
The La Liga giants should really have taken their chances as Intercity netted an unlikely equaliser when former Barcelona youth product Oriol Soldevila Puig tapped in from close range.
Then a frenetic few minutes saw Barcelona regain the lead thanks to a chipped finish from Dembélé from a Gavi pass, before Soldevila Puig sensationally equalise for intercity just a minute later.
No sooner had the supporters drawn breath from that exchange than Raphinha had given his side the lead when he swept in Jordi Alba’s cross at the far post.
Iñaki Peña made a superb save to deny a third from Soldevila Puig, but then the former Barcelona man turned up with his hat-trick a minute later after an inspired performance.
The tie finished deadlocked at 3-3 after 90 minutes, and in extra time Ansu Fati came to Barça’s rescue, scoring from Raphinha’s pull-back via a deflection.
