Sunderland FC will not be thrilled at the performance of Jewison Bennette while out on loan in Europe.

The Black Cats signed the Costa Rica international in the summer of 2022. He joined the club from Herediano, signing a four-year contract as an 18-year-old in August that year. He had already won six caps for his country, and helped his side qualify for the Qatar World Cup.

Bennette was the youngest ever player for Costa Rica, so there were high hopes that he could develop into a top player at the Stadium of Light.

After a slow start to life in the North West, he secured a loan move to Aris Thessaloniki in January. He signed a deal to spend the rest of the campaign in the Greek league, although it has not quite gone as he would have liked.

Despite high hopes for Bennette in Greece, his loan move to Aris Thessaloniki has not gone to plan.

Since joining the club in January, the forward has only played two matches for the Greek side. He started in these games, although was hooked off at half-time in both appearances.

Since then, he has not been selected for the team at all, not even appearing on the bench for any of their other league games.

The forward also picked up an injury last month, ruling him out of the play-off matches in the Greek Super League. His season looks to be over, with very little to show for it. His move to Greece has done nothing to impress, and the stats back that up.

He only managed one shot in his two matches, according to Fotmob, while also only managing one successful dribble while playing on the wing. He has averaged only 35 touches per 90 minutes, showing how little he has been involved in the matches.

Adding to the fact that he only played a single minute for the Black Cats this season, Bennette's current prospects are looking bleak.

Sunderland should look to loan Bennette out again

Given he has failed to impress while out on loan, Sunderland will not be jumping at the chance to play Bennette in the first team next season.

Injuries have not helped, but he has not shown anything to show that he is ready for regular first team football in a club who hope to be battling at the top end of the Championship.

Another loan move away seems most likely. With two years left on his contract, the club will still be hoping that the 19-year-old can turn things around. Right now, nobody would be willing to pay a decent transfer fee after recent performances, if it was to be a permanent parting of ways Sunderland craved.

The club will want him to spend another year away from the Stadium of Light, and hopefully do better than his time at Aris Thessaloniki. Improved performances will either make him a viable option for the Black Cats, or attract a transfer fee from another club in the final year of his deal.

He is still 19-years-old, so the club shouldn't give up on him quite yet. However, it could be make-or-break over the next season for Bennette at Sunderland.
