Speaking to ITV (h/t The Mirror), Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has asked for patience with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and to not sack him right away.
The Norwegian boss has come under a lot of scrutiny at the start of the season due to poor performances in the Cup competitions as well as in the Premier League to a certain extent.
The Red Devils have been knocked out of the EFL Cup while they are currently hanging on by a thread in their Champions League group. They have also dropped points in two consecutive Premier League games, putting all the more pressure on the manager and the team.
However, Solskjaer’s former teammate Peter Schmeichel has now come out and backed his compatriot at the job and believes he is a better option than the ones that came before him. Schmeichel told ITV (h/t The Mirror):
“I think it’s ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous. Do they want another [Louis] Van Gaal or another Mourinho? What do they want? That period before him [Solskjaer], a lot of players came in, and a lot of coaches left, so everything needs to be rebuilt. I hope people understand that it takes time.“Remember, we finished runners-up last season, if we can do that again, it will still be very good. So give Ole time. Let’s not throw all these big headlines out there saying ‘Ole out’, because the next question is ‘who?’
Although Solskjaer has steadied the ship at Old Trafford, he is yet to win silverware, something both Van Gaal and Mourinho did in their time at Manchester.
However, it is a long season, and given that they are still in contention in three competitions, they could lift some a trophy by the end of this season.
