As Manchester City were on their way to a 5-2 win over Crystal Palace at the Etihad on Saturday, Ederson went down injured. City’s number-one keeper had set up his team’s fourth goal of the match at the Etihad with a sublime assist for James McAtee to score in the 56th minute. But in the 65th minute of the game, Ederson was replaced by Stefan Ortega in goal. Now a new report indicates that City are fearful that Ederson could face a prolonged spell on the sidelines due to the injury he sustained on Saturday.
Jack Gaughan has reported for the Daily Mail that Ederson is undergoing tests on the groin injury he sustained against Crystal Palace. Furthermore, Gaughan reports that City’s number-one keeper has been battling a groin issue all season. Gaughan also reports that the injury has seen Ederson fail to train fully for the majority of this season.
Manchester City will not want to lose Ederson at such a pivotal point of the season. Although he hasn’t been at his best this season he is crucial to City’s play. His assist for James McAtee’s goal on Saturday shows this. Ederson plays a crucial role in City’s build-up play and there is no measurement to gauge how pivotal that is to City’s game. As they bid to secure Champions League qualification for next season Ederson, if fit, would have a key role to play in that chase.
But now it seems that Ederson could face a spell on the sidelines. Manchester City do have Stefan Ortega who can start in Ederson’s absence. But losing Ederson would be a sizable blow despite how reliable Ortega is in goal. Pep Guardiola’s side do lose an element of their play when Ederson is unavailable.
A further update on the condition of Ederson is expected when Pep Guardiola fronts the media on Friday. The hope is that Ederson’s injury isn’t too serious. He is crucial to City’s play and they will need him during the final stages of this season.
