With Gareth Bale back in action, it seemed Real Madrid fans were about to see the BBC frontline start for the first time in eight months.
Unfortunately, that won’t be happening.
A hip injury has ruled Karim Benzema out for around three weeks, opening up the opportunity for Zinedine Zidane to field Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo up front together.
Benzema has remained Madrid’s first choice striker despite a relatively barren season, though Bale’s return would have left the Madrid manager with difficult decisions to make.
With Benzema now injured, Zidane won’t have to make the difficult call to leave Isco out of the side.
Madrid return from a winter break on 4 January with a Copa del Rey match against Numancia.
